How Hoot Sheet works

Independent football research: sourced player briefs, our own forecasts with their ranges, and a public record of every call.

Our bespectacled owl editor

Meet the editor

Sharp eyes. Terrible puns.

He follows the evidence, questions the hype, and enjoys truly dreadful owl puns. Expect a point of view and an honest change of mind when the facts change.

Hoot Sheet was previously called Down Field. The research and original forecast timestamps remain intact.

Research and forecasts have different jobs

A brief summarizes attributed team reports and marks where we are interpreting. A forecast comes from our own statistical model. A cited report does not mean the model used it; the two carry separate timestamps on every page.

Reading a forecast

The expected total is the mean of the model’s distribution for the game. The range runs from the 15th to the 85th percentile, so about seven games in ten land inside it. Ranks are within a position. Tiers follow twelve-team starter slots: RB1 is ranks one to twelve, RB2 the next twelve.

This week’s numbers are built from prior-season production with the current roster and schedule. Injury reports, practice reports, weather, and news since the capture are not in them. When the model lacks enough history it abstains, and an abstention is never shown as zero.

PPR here means one point per reception, four per passing touchdown, one per twenty-five passing yards, one per ten rushing or receiving yards, six per rushing or receiving touchdown, and deductions for interceptions and lost fumbles. Your league may differ.

Statistics, rosters, schedules, and team colors come from nflverse under CC BY 4.0. Research uses official team news feeds. Each brief links the original report with its publication and retrieval dates. We do not reproduce article bodies.

Images and marks

Player photographs are the league’s published headshots, loaded from the league’s image service through the addresses nflverse distributes; we do not copy or store them. Club marks are the team abbreviation on the club’s colors. We use no logos, wordmarks, or uniform artwork. The engraved owl is original generated brand artwork. Newsreader and Instrument Sans are included under their respective SIL Open Font Licenses.
